Michael Yeung 

Hong Kong-based percussionist Michael Yeung Ching Laam is emerging as a professional voice in the new music landscape. Highlights of 2019-20 include performing with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, in the 33rd Castell de Peralada Festival in Barcelona, Spain; a performance of John Luther Adams’ “Strange and Sacred Noise” with members of the Up:Strike Project, in an immersive 75-minute long multimedia production; and making his concerto debut with the La Salle College Old Boys’ Symphony Orchestra, playing Anders Koppel’s Marimba Concerto No. 1, 3rd movement.

With support from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund, Michael is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at Yale School of Music under renowned percussion pedagogue Robert Van Sice. Michael completed his undergraduate degree in 2020 at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He is grateful to his former teachers James Boznos and Dr. Lung Heung Wing, with whom he has been with for 15 years.

Alvin Chan

Alvin Chan Chun San studied in The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts where he holds a  degree in Bachelor of Music (Honours) with first-class honour and a degree in Master of Music  under the full scholarships of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund. During his  study, he has also been awarded the SAR Philharmonic Scholarship and the Chan Ho Choi  Enchanting Music Scholarship. His teachers are Dr Lung Heung-wing, James Boznos and Alan  Cumberland.  

Alvin is an experienced performer in many kinds of music genres. He is the resident percussionist  of Hong Kong Gaudeamus Dunhuang Ensemble since 2018 and has toured to Dunhuang and  Quanzhou. In 2019, Alvin co-founded “Vertex Percussion Duo” and “M.A.R.B.L.E.S. Percussion”.  Within the same year, he joined the Sō Percussion Summer Institute with scholarships in  Princeton where he performed with percussionists from all over the world. Alvin is also the  associated artist of Toolbox Percussion under the support of Hong Kong Arts Development  Council. He has performed with Third Coast Percussion in Toolbox International Creative  Academy in 2020. Alvin toured to China, Taiwan and Japan as a member of the Asian Youth  Orchestra in 2015. In 2017, he performed in the World Dance Alliance Global Summit in St.  John's, Canada, as an accompanist under the support of Hong Kong Arts Development Council. 

Alvin is also a freelance player of Macau Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Philharmonia APA.

Rainbow Lau

LAU Wai Hung, Rainbow was a trainee of Hong Kong Music Office since childhood and learn Chinese Percussion under Ho Man Chuen and Chau Chin Tung. She holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) Degree and a Master of Music Degree with Distinction from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. During academy years, She studies Western percussion under Aziz Barnard Luce, James Boznos, Alan Cumberland, Dr. Lung Heung Wing as well as Chinese percussion under Yim Hok Man. She participated in the master classes from Percussions Claviers de Lyon, Trey Wyatt, Rainer Seegers, Joe Porter, Li Biao and Yu Le etc. Rainbow has acquired ABRSM Diploma in percussion with distinction. 

 

Rainbow participated in lots of Chinese and Western Orchestra. She often performed in local and also was touredto different cities. Nowadays She is active to perform with Opera production such as performer of  “Kiss of Tosca” at 2018 that production by More Than Musical. Rainbow is a freelancer of Opera Hong Kong, Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, Windpipe music ensemble. 

 

Beside of teaching in several primary school and secondary school, Rainbow also conducts Percussion ensemble. Rainbow is a co founder of Percussion ensemble “M.A.R.B.L.E.S Percussion ”.

Bevis Ng 

With full support from the HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund, Ng Chin Pok Bevis is currently in the Bachelor of Music (Hons.) at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Percussion. His teachers include Dr. Matthew Lau, Dr. Lung Heung Wing and James Boznos.

Bevis is a passionate solo performer. The highlights of his solo playing include a solo recital at Tai Kwun and performing "Concerto for Marimba and Strings" by Emmanuel Séjourne with the Academy Symphony Orchestra in 2018. He was chosen as the final 16 candidates for RTHK4’s Young Music Maker 2019, where he made his TV and radio debut.

 

Besides solo playing, Bevis is an active chamber percussionist. He was selected as one of the ensemble artists in the World Percussion Group 2019 touring Spain & Portugal. He is a scholarship recipient at the So Percussion Summer Institution 2019. He is a core member of The Up:Strike Project, an emerging contemporary percussion chamber group in Hong Kong.

 

Bevis is a freelance percussionist at the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

Lauren Yuen

Lauren Yuen Man Lam is a percussionist and music educator based in Hong Kong. She is the Co-founder and Director of Vertex Percussion Studio.

Lauren was awarded Bachelor of Music (Honours) Degree at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She majored in Percussion and studied percussion with Sophia Woo Shuk-Fai, timpani with James Boznos, and jazz vibraphone with Chien Chien Lu. She was awarded scholarships including the Society of HKAPA local Scholarships. 

Lauren is an experienced performer. In 2021, her performance on Nathan Daughtry’s Vibraphone Concerto was chosen by RTHK Radio 4 and will be broadcasted in “Student Concert Hall”. In 2020, Lauren co-founded “M.A.R.B.L.E.S. Percussion” and “Vertex Percussio Duo”. In 2019, Lauren performed  with the Li Biao Percussion Group in Hong Kong Arts Festival, and participated in the Sō Percussion Summer Institute with scholarships. In 2018, she performed Edgar Varése’s “Ionisation” with percussionists of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Lauren has also given numerous performances overseas including Princeton University, Vienna Musikverein, Tsinghua University, and Central Conservatory of Music.

Lauren actively participates in local orchestras, she works as a freelance percussionist in Opera Hong Kong, Hong Kong Strings, Gustav Mahler Orchestra, and Hong Kong Oratorio Society.

Lauren has actively performed in numerous Percussion and Timpani masterclasses, including Percussion masterclasses by Li Biao, Leo Le Yu, Josie Zhe Lin, Timpani masterclasses by Rainer Seegers, David Herbert, and Marcus Rhoten. 

Lauren is an experienced percussion tutor. Her students had won numerous prizes from different music competitions, including the 2020 Asia Musicians Competition, The 3rd Hong Kong Youth Cup International Music Contest, International Young Artist Music Contest 2020, and IPEA Elites Competition (Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan). Lauren also works as an percussion adjudicator in local music competitions, including The 3rd & 4th Hong Kong Youth Cup International Music Contest.

Eugene Kwong (鄺敏蔚)

Currently a master student at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Eugene Kwong is studying percussion performance with Aziz D. Bard Luce and James Boznos, as well as much musical inspiration from Dr Matthew Lau, under the full financial support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund from 2018. 

As a former member of Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO) 2015-2017, Eugene went on a world tour and performed in Ravello Festival, Young Euro Classic Festival and Lucerne Festival with the group in 2017. She actively participated in the masterclasses from David Herbert, Markus Rhoten, Rainer Seegers, Christopher Deviney, Li Biao, Pius Cheung, Leo Yu and Josie Lin etc. The HKAPA percussion studio was invited to perform ‘Ionization’ by Edgard Varèse with Li Biao percussion group in Hong Kong Arts Festival 2019. Eugene was selected as ensemble artist of World Percussion Group 2019 hosted by Maraca2, going on UK, Spain and Portugal Tour with the group. Eugene is active in international percussion events. She joined International Katarzyna Myćka Marimba Academy 2017 and So Percussion Summer Institute 2019. 

Kwong is a freelance percussionist of Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Hong Kong City Chamber Orchestra, Opera Hong Kong, Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia etc. In 2020, Eugene became an associate member of The Up:Strike Project.

Sunny Ho

Sunny HO is charting a multi-faceted career by playing various roles in diverse musical activities. In 2020, he co-organized the “Beethoven Symphony Marathon” in The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) as a member of the student committee and conducted the Academy Symphony Orchestra during the performance. He is the co-founder of and chamber musician in M.A.R.B.L.E.S. Percussion and is currently a member of the Inheritage Philharmonic and pianist of the master conducting programme in the HKAPA.

Sunny is the 3rd Prize Winner of the 2016 Parsons Music Scholarship for Wind, Brass and Percussion Instruments and 2nd Prize Winner with First Class Award (1st Prize not Awarded) of the 19th Hong Kong Asia Piano Open Competition (Liszt Free Choice Class) in 2016. He has performed in the 2019 Hong Kong Arts Festival with Li Biao Percussion Group, 2018 “After Hours Classics” Concert held by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, 2018 Asian Youth Orchestra Rehearsal Camp and Asia Tour, and the 2018 celebration concert of the Hong Kong International Airport 20th anniversary. He also performed as an associate member of The Up:Strike Project in the “Tai Kwun X The Up:Strike Project – Afternoon Series” and “Strange and Sacred Noise” Percussion Concert.

Sunny graduated with first-class honours from the HKAPA where he holds a Bachelor of Music Degree. He was awarded the “Best Academic Achievement Prizes” from the School of Music and numerous scholarships including the “2020 Hong Kong Children’s Choir Chan Ho Choi Memorial Scholarship” and “2019 HSBC Hong Kong Scholarship”. He majors in Western Percussion under the guidance of Mr. Choy Lap-tak and Mr. James Boznos, the principal timpanist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
